The EU Referendum: Brexit, racism, privilege and protest.

I've seen so many posts suggesting that people should "get over" the referendum results, sorry (not sorry) but this is a decision that is going to impact every aspect of the rest of our lives, it's really very important...and if you can't empathise with that, I'm not convinced that you understand exactly what the referendum is about. Some argue that protesting against the referendum results is "anti-democratic" however, it's just as democratic to protest, as it is to vote. You have a democratic right to participate in politics, that means voting, protesting, debating and complaining to your heart's content is very much your democratic right. The purpose of debating and protesting is not just to reverse the chosen course of action, it's to make policy makers aware that they need to consider the interests of those that voted remain, as much as the interests of those that voted to leave, this is a democracy after all. Also, whether or not you are ready to admit it, the referendum was hijacked by the far-right. I don't for a second believe that all people who voted to leave are racist. I truly, from the bottom of my heart, know that the UK is better than that. However, in some sections of society, the referendum was all about immigration, which was influenced by far-right parties, media groups and interest groups. Evidence, such as increased incidents of racial abuse, suggests that the far-right have regarded the vote to leave as an endorsement of their views. So actually, we aren't just concerned about leaving the EU, we are talking about how to tackle racism, how to put an end to fascism, how to help people to feel less disenfranchised, how to create a country that works for everyone and how to "fix" the divided society that we have been left with. So before you tell someone to "get over"  the results, consider your own privilege.. What is it about you, that makes you different to those that are terrified about the changes that the referendum will bring? Is it your age? Is it the amount of years you've had to establish yourself?  Is it your access to work and education?  Is it you gender? Your race? Check your privilege, find some empathy, open your eyes to the rise of the far right and let us exercise our democratic right of participation.
